Gardening To Do List for September

- Plant vegetable plants. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, chard, collards, endive, kale, lettuce, mustard.

- Plant herb seeds. Borage, caraway, chamomile, chervil, chives, cilantro, dill, fennel, parsley, summer savory.

- Plant herbs plants. All perennial herb plants; plus cilantro, dill, fennel, parsley.

- Plant flower/ornamental seeds. Alyssum, calendula, cornflower, delphinium, hollyhock, Johnny jump-up, larkspur, liatris, love-in-a-mist (nigella), pansy, poppy, snapdragon, stock, sweet pea.

- Plant annual flower/ornamental plants. Alyssum, aster, calendula, cornflower, dianthus, larkspur, lobelia, petunia, phlox, snapdragon, stock.

- Plant perennial plants. All of them, including ornamental grasses.

- Plant trees and shrubs. Fall is the best time!

- Plant ground covers. Horseherb, frog fruit, pigeonberry, wedelia, mountain pea, and leadwort.

- Watch out for brown patches on the lawn. Fall is the prime season for this fungal disease. Symptoms appear as fairly circular areas of brown. There are a variety of organic treatments.

- Plant winter cover crops. Cover crops assist in preventing weeds as mulches do, but they also improve the soil as they grow. The cover crops to plant in the fall are clover, hairy vetch, elbon (cereal) rye, Austrian winter peas, or annual rye.

This Circle C area school has a stellar track record that lends itself to this opportunity. The Bailey band has won national competitions against high school bands, it continues to win national awards year after year, and it is currently considered one of the top three middle school bands in the country (as designated by a group called Music for All). They’ve even received an invitation from Argentina to play in its Steel Drum Festival.

Being talented enough to be invited to the party is only half the story, though; now the group has to raise the nearly $50,000 that it will take to get them there. In addition to the 62 band members, funds need to be raised to cover airfare, hotel rooms, food, and other expenses for the three band directors, one principal, and 12 chaperones. The boosters and parents have worked on negotiating discounted rates through Southwest airlines, and the airline is waiving fees for baggage so the students can easily transport their instruments. That’s good, considering the group has reserved 80 seats – nearly half the plane! They’re accepting donations from the community to help get them there at http:/www.gofundme.com/baileywindensemble.

Bailey Middle School has an amazing band department, and it is also home to other great elements. Bailey is one of only two AISD middle schools (Gorzycki, another Southwest Austin school, is the other) rated as “Recognized” by the Texas Education Agency’s annual school ratings. Schools in the Circle C area are exceptional by many standards, and finding a home there can lead to a great educational and extracurricular future for kids.

This group that practices near Circle C at the Friendship Baptist Church is looking for girls and boys between the ages of 9-13 (though they will accept kids as young as four), to join their squad. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm, a good attitude, and team spirit. Participants will learn the basics of cheerleading, including cheers, chants, motions, tumbling, dance, and basic cheer stunts and will do half-time performances and dance routines during the Cowboys’ home games. They also will participate in a league competition in October.

Meetings will be held twice weekly, and practice will happen at the same time as the football team, all at the church that is easily accessible from Southwest Austin, particularly communities like Travis Country and Village at Western Oaks. Registration closes at the end of August and includes uniforms and shoes; registration information can be found on the Hill Country Cowboys Football and Cheerleading website.

Sports can be a great way to build both communities and families. Enrolling children in cheerleading allows for parents to have more active participation in their children’s lives and is a great way to meet new neighbors. This July, the center is offering a Nature Nights series to educate visitors about plants, animals, and the ecology of Central Texas. These Thursday night events, held July 12, 19, and 26, include hikes with experts in their fields, interactive presentations, and nature crafting for kids of all ages. Each night has a different theme; July 12 features Birds of Prey, July 19 gets a little Batty, and July 26 closes out the series with Snakes.

There’s also a mesmerizing display, “A Bouquet for Mrs. J,” giant sculptures of bluebonnets and other wildflowers created by Logan Stollenwerck as a loving tribute to Lady Bird Johnson and to commemorate what would have been her 100^th birthday year. This unique exhibit is on display through September 3. Finally, “Paintings on Silk” is a beautiful display of wildflowers painted on silk by Swiss artist Caitlin Hill, running through August 19.

From July 9 through 13, children ages 5-11 can participate in the “All the World’s a Stage” summer camp. The camp runs nearly all day from 9:30am-4:30pm and is hosted at the new Circle C HOA Community Center. The Southwest Austin area is bustling more and more these days, adding plenty of recreational activities and dining and shopping options to the area.
